Coming into the cooler, nay, colder months, something happens to our taste buds. Pumpkins, cranberries and apples abound. We want to smother ourselves in fragrant kitchen scents and downy comforters.
For your culinary pleasure, BooYah! has put together four rich and luscious shrubs to celebrate the Holiday Season.
MULLED PUMPKIN SHRUB
Pumpkin nectar gleaned from farm fresh baking pumpkins are slowly warmed together with cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg and star anise to create this intoxicating brew.
We suggest using this shrub for roasting pork, chicken or tempeh.
Or try a Hot Mulled Pumpkin Toddy by adding a shot of shrub to rum equal parts (about ¼ cup) rum and butterscotch-flavored schnapps.
SPICED RED PEAR & TURKISH FIG
Not surprising that Nature brings Red Pears and Turkish Figs together in the autumn ripening season. BooYah! combines these beautiful fruits with cinnamon, star anise and fresh ginger root to achieve a lovely Middle Eastern taste and aroma.
This unique shrub pairs particularly well with beef, but we’ve found it also makes a succulent marinade for fish.
Bourbon is a perfect partner for cocktailing, or create a gorgeous martini.
Something about this flavor combination is reminiscent of Holiday get togethers. Peppermint Apple Shrub is aromatic and lively, inviting in a warm mug of tea or energizing over club soda and ice.
Peppermint Apple makes a lovely veggie spritzer and is a delicious marinade for nearly any meat or vegan roast.
A Whiskey Mint Apple iced tea works delightfully well in the thermos to provide comfort and joy while withstanding the chill at the football or soccer field. Simply mix 4 ounces mint iced tea with 1-1/2 ounces Crown Royal Apple Whisky and 1 ounce Peppermint Apple Shrub. If desired, a ½ ounce of apple liquor can be added for a one-two punch!
ORANGE CINNAMON CLOVE
As a Girl Scout, every year we made orange-cinnamon-clove Christmas tree ornaments. Your hands would be all sticky and the room was filled with the scent of juicy oranges and hear-warming cinnamon and cloves.
Orange Cinnamon Clove Shrub is a quintessential marinade for white fish. Spritz on a warm grain salad or a soba noodle and vegetable dish for a special tang.
A wonderfully healthy warm drink for cold and flu season, combine 1 ounce of Orange Cinnamon Clove Shrub with 3⁄4 cup fresh orange juice and 2-3 tablespoons of honey. Add a slice of fresh ginger root or a pinch of ginger powder if desired, and microwave for 1 minute.
